Star Cinema has been part of the Sidney community since September 1998, when Mayor Don Amos contacted Sandy Oliver, then running a cinema on Salt Spring Island, to ask if she would consider opening one here. Sandy teamed up with her sister Carolyn Lewis, and another pair of sisters, Judy and Marlene, to make it happen.
The small two-screen theatre opened on Third Street and quickly became a local favourite. With its cozy lobby, friendly faces, and thoughtful film selection, Star Cinema offered more than just movies—it became a gathering place where neighbours met, chatted, and shared popcorn before the lights dimmed.
From the beginning, Star Cinema has showcased a mix of Hollywood hits, independent films, and international stories—bringing a wide range of cinema to the heart of Sidney.
When Carolyn Lewis passed away in 2012, Sandy continued running the theatre with the same warmth and community spirit that had always defined it.
In 2013, when all theatres were required to switch from film to digital projection, Star Cinema faced a costly upgrade it couldn’t avoid. The people of Sidney rallied together, raising over $180,000 to purchase new digital projectors and seats. That incredible show of support ensured the theatre could keep its doors open and continue bringing movies to the community it loves.
By 2018, the original building was set for redevelopment as part of the Cameo project—a mixed-use development by Casman Properties that would include a brand-new home for Star Cinema.
After 21 wonderful years at its original location, the theatre closed its doors in December 2019 and moved to a temporary space on Fifth Street, operating there through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On November 4, 2022, Star Cinema proudly reopened in its new home—back on Third Street, inside the Cameo building. The new theatre features three screens, comfortable seating for over 300 guests, and full accessibility, all while keeping the same friendly, local charm that has made it a community treasure for over two decades.
Today, Star Cinema continues to be a cornerstone of Sidney—a place built on collaboration, perseverance, and a shared love of film. Whether you’re here for a new release, an independent feature, a live broadcast of The Metropolitan Opera or simply a delicious bag of popcorn, Star Cinema is happy to welcome you.
“Most of all, I love that although we are your customers, the Star feels like it belongs to us and our town. You are a big part of our community; a real treasure and we appreciate you more than you could know.” )
